History Behind the Temple
According to legends, Guru Dronacharya was a resident of Ambota village. Each day, he used to take a holy dip in the Swan River, located near the temple, before heading towards the Himalayas to worship Lord Shiva.
Guru Dronacharya had a daughter named Yayati, who was curious about his daily routine. When she insisted on knowing the reason behind his spiritual practice, Guru Dronacharya advised her to chant ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ with faith before revealing the truth.
With unwavering devotion, Yayati followed her father’s instructions, and after a few days of dedicated chanting, Lord Shiva appeared before her in the form of a child and played with her. Guru Dronacharya, upon discovering this divine event, understood its significance. Yayati then requested Lord Shiva to stay in the village forever, and Lord Shiva agreed, manifesting himself in the form of a Shivlinga. Consequently, Guru Dronacharya built a temple, enshrining the sacred Lingam.
Another belief states that Shiv Bari Temple is positioned south of Mata Chintpurni Temple, where Lord Shiva resides in the form of Maharudra, serving as a protector in addition to four other Maharudras, safeguarding the temple in all directions.
Miraculous Incident During the Mughal Period
During the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, his soldiers attacked the temple and attempted to excavate the Pindi. However, as they began digging, a swarm of red-colored insects emerged from the Shivlinga, attacking the soldiers and leaving them unconscious.
Witnessing this supernatural event, Aurangzeb and his soldiers surrendered before Lord Shiva and sought forgiveness for their actions. The villagers then sprinkled the sacred Jalhari water on the soldiers, reviving them. Acknowledging the temple’s divine power, the Mughal forces retreated.
