Situated along the Hamirpur-Nadaun road, about 6 kilometers from Hamirpur town in Himachal Pradesh, the Jhanyari Devi Temple boasts a history of more than two centuries. Managed by a local committee, the temple holds a special annual fair on the ‘Jeshth-Shukla‘ ‘ashtami‘. During this event, both locals and visitors from distant places flock to the temple grounds in large numbers. The temple, constructed by a king of the Katoch Dynasty, serves as a significant site of historical importance, with the Goddess being revered as the kul-devi (patron Goddess).

Legends about Jhanyari Devi Temple

Legends surrounding the Jhanyari Devi Temple recount a fascinating tale explaining why the temple dedicated to the Patron Goddess of the Katochs was established in an unconventional location, outside the royal palace. According to the story, the king received divine instructions from the Goddess in his dreams, guiding him to construct a temple in her honor and revealing the specific location.

Following the customs of the era, the king embarked on a grand procession, accompanied by an ornate palanquin, to search for the Goddess and bring her back to the capital with great pomp. Following the path outlined in his dreams, he eventually discovered the designated spot.

Upon reaching the destination, the king attempted to place the idol in the palanquin, only to find it inexplicably too heavy to lift. Disheartened, he decided to spend the night there. During his sleep, another dream conveyed that placing the idol in the palanquin while it was on the ground was incorrect. Awakening immediately, the king, after consulting with his minister, resolved to build the temple right there. Consequently, a temple was erected on the very spot.

With the passage of time, the kingdom and royal privileges have been lost, and the temple is now under the care of a committee elected by the local community. Although the royal grandeur may have faded, the temple continues to be a focal point of devotion, sustained by the unwavering dedication of the people.
